With almost a month’s worth of exciting and notable tournaments behind us, we now look forward to the WGC Dell Technologies Match Play Championship. A unique and refreshing style to the PGA Tour, there’s plenty of buzz and excitement behind 64 of the top 69 golfers in the World competing one-on-one, a substantial change from the 156-man field that we are used to.

The WGC Match Play is hosted by the Austin Country Club in Austin, Texas. This week Billy Horschel will look to defend his title after beating Scottie Scheffler 2&1 in 2021.

With the matchups for the WGC Match Play having been released on Monday morning, it’s time to take a closer look at the most exciting ones to look forward to this week.

Group 5: Scottie Scheffler, Matt Fitzpatrick, Tommy Fleetwood, Ian Poulter

This group is interesting for many reasons. Scheffler, the World No. 5, is arguably the hottest golfer on Tour right now, with 2 wins this month alone. On the other side, the 3 remaining golfers all reside from England, allowing for some fun bragging rights between the three. Fleetwood is coming off of a T-16 finish at the Valspar Championship, while the young Fitzpatrick will look to battle his veteran countrymen.

Group 8: Dustin Johnson, Max Homa, Matthew Wolff, Mackenzie Hughes

This group features a number of golfers looking to find that spark to their season. Johnson hasn’t had a victory since the Masters in 2020 and recently fell out of the Top 10 in the World Rankings for the first time in 7 years. Wolff has only 2 Top-10 finishes this season, while Hughes has now missed the cut in 2 consecutive weeks. Homa is the only one in this group that seemingly has momentum on his side, an advantage entering the week.

Group 11: Jordan Spieth, Adam Scott, Justin Rose, Keegan Bradley

This group features Spieth, a golfer who has seemingly rediscovered his confidence of late. He has since climbed to 15th in the World Golf Rankings. Surrounding him is a trio of veterans with plenty of history and victories. Scott, Rose, and Bradley have combined for 28 victories, meaning they have the ability to perform when it matters most. Don’t be surprised if one of these golfers dominates this group from the start at the 2022 WGC Match Play.

In a loaded field, expect this week to come with plenty of excitement and drama. We won’t see this match play style again until the President’s Cup in September, so soak in this week’s event and be sure to focus on these matchups if you’re looking for some World-class action.
