2022 WGC-Dell Match Play Groups and Picks

Group One- Jon Rahm, Patrick Reed, Cameron Young, Sebastian Munoz

Pick: Jon Rahm

Rahm was runner-up at the WGC-Dell Match Play in 2017 when he was beaten by eventual winner Dustin Johnson. In 2021 he made the Quarter-Finals before losing to Scottie Scheffler. The Spaniard has a solid 11-6-3 match play record in his career and even though this group could potentially be tricky I still like his chances to advance once again.

Group Two- Collin Morikawa, Jason Kokrak, Sergio Garcia, Robert MacIntyre

Pick: Sergio Garcia

This was a toss-up between Bobby Mac and Sergio, I expect one of these two to upset top-seeded Morikawa in this spot. Austin local Garcia gets the nod as he has advanced past this phase in each of his last three starts at Austin CC.

Group Three- Viktor Hovland, Will Zalatoris, Cameron Tringale, Sepp Straka

Pick: Will Zalatoris

Group three could be one of several groups to produce a surprise winner. I give the slight edge to Zalatoris over Hovland in this spot, Viktor has played a bunch of golf recently and I believe that may catch up with him this week. Willy Z is another Texas local and while he has struggled with his putter, Hovland has struggled around the greens. Zalatoris won one match in his debut last year at Austin CC and he will go one step further this time around.

Group Four- Patrick Cantlay, Sungjae Im, Seamus Power, Keith Mitchell

Pick: Patrick Cantlay

Patrick was knocked out in a sudden-death playoff loss last year, a result that denied him the opportunity to progress through to the last 16. He has a very nice 7-3-1 match play record overall and was fantastic at the Ryder Cup last September. Cantlay will face less resistance progressing from his group this time, and he is a real threat to make a deep run throughout the bracket in 2022.
