WGC-Dell Match Play: These three are sizzling entering Friday
By Sean McCann
After an exciting and action-packed first two rounds of the WGC-Dell Match Play Championship, we now have a better idea of the early frontrunners entering Friday.
With surprising victories, such as Maverick McNealy’s shocking 8&6 victory over the Genesis Invitational champion Joaquin Niemann on Day 1, to disappointing losses, including American Patrick Cantlay’s 5&4 loss to Irishman Seamus Power on Thursday.
With Round 3 set to kick off on Friday, let’s take a closer look at three golfers that are playing their best golf entering Friday.
Three golfers coming into Friday hot at the WGC-Dell Match Play
Jon Rahm
Rahm entered the week still hanging on to the No. 1 Rank in the World, despite recent charges from golfers like Collin Morikawa. Looking to solidify his position, the Spaniard has come out firing this week at the WGC-Dell Match Play, defeating Sebastian Munoz 4&2 and Cameron Young 5&4 respectively. It never seemed to be a struggle for Rahm as he racked up 7 birdies in the first two days. He also was aided during the second day, largely due to Cameron Young’s 5 bogeys on the day. When Rahm gets hot like this not many golfers in the World can stop him.
Brooks Koepka
The American star has experienced a mediocre start to the season, but it seems like he’s trying to make a statement this week in front of the World’s best golfers. Koepka, in one of the tougher groups of the week, has now defeated South African Erik Van Rooyen 3&2, and the red-hot Harold Varner III 2&1. Koepka provided quality entertainment Thursday, finishing with an outstanding 7 birdies and 2 bogeys in the 17 holes played. If Brooksy can find a bit more consistency in his game the rest of the way, watch out!.
Dustin Johnson
Johnson, the former World No. 1, is no stranger to success in this tournament after having come away as the champion in 2017 when he defeated current World No. 1 Jon Rahm (above). Now five years later the American has defeated Canadian MacKenzie Hughes 3&2, and Matthew Wolff pretty handedly, 4&2. Dustin Johnson has consistently used his heavy drives to push past the competition, and his eagle on Hole 16 to put Wolff away doesn’t hurt either. Entering Friday at the WGC-Dell Match Play it seems as if Johnson has rediscovered the confidence that had lifted him to the top of world rankings, and we all know what he is capable of when at his best.
If Rounds 1 & 2 were any indication, we should see some nail-biting matches on Friday. Some golfers will be looking to solidify the top spot in their groups, all while putting the rest of the field on notice. The rest will simply be looking to find the win column and stay alive. With so many matches to follow these three will look to provide the most entertainment on Friday at the WGC-Dell Match Play.
