As the calendar is set to flip to April, the countdown to the Masters is a week away. Players have one last chance to get competitive reps before heading to Augusta National, or they have one last chance to earn their way into the field.

This week’s setting is the Valero Texas Open, one of the PGA Tour’s more historic tournaments. The venue is the Oaks course at TPC San Antonio, host site since it opened in 2010.

The Greg Norman design is a par-72 measuring 7,435 yards. Bermuda grass with rye overseed composes fairways and rough with an overseed of poa trivialis and velvet bent on the greens.

The fairways are fairly generous and the rough is penal in spots at the Valero Texas Open

The course’s main defense is the usual windy conditions predominant here and throughout Texas. There’s room for off-line tee shots and approaches, but going too far astray can lead to native areas and big numbers.

Players who can hit a cut off the tee will benefit on several holes. Length isn’t a prerequisite to win, but it can give a player an advantage on the par-5s where three play over 590 yards on the card.

The field features 144 players vying to make the traditional 36-hole cut of top 65 and ties.

The weather forecast is dry and warm with temperatures primarily in the 60s-80s. It expects to be breezy, which is no surprise in Texas.

There are a decent mix of big names in the field, some of who made my power rankings.

Let’s get into them:
