Abraham Ancer gets to stay in his home state for another week, and this time it’s in his residence of San Antonio.

The Mexican-American is a McAllen, Texas native who is coming off a successful run at the WGC-Dell Match Play where he advanced to the quarterfinals for the first time in his career.

Ancer knocked off Bubba Watson and Webb Simpson and tied Brian Harman to win his group. He then throttled Collin Morikawa 7&6 in the round of 16, the largest margin of victory in the knockout rounds.

Ancer’s run came to an end with a 2UP loss to Corey Conners, who went on to win third place.

Ancer hopes hometown advantage will serve him well at Texas Open

It was a nice bounceback week for the 31-year-old who was coming off a missed cut the week prior at the Valspar Championship. Hopefully, another tournament starting with “Val” will treat him better.

That Valspar MC was a mere blip on the radar for a man who’s missed just two cuts throughout the 2021-22 season. He won his first PGA Tour event last season at the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational. He followed it up this season with two top-10s (and another on the Asian Tour) and three more top-30s.

The former Oklahoma Sooner is 11th on the PGA Tour in driving accuracy (67.99%). It’s tough to make it around the Oaks course without some stumbles. Fortunately, Ancer is 21st in bounce back percentage (28.36%).

He’s 5-for-5 making the cut.

“I’m pumped to be here,” Ancer was transcribed by Tee Scripts in 2021. “Home game for me, I live just down the road, so sleeping in my own bed is awesome. It won’t take me very long to get here. The golf course is in great shape. I love playing here, I love playing in front of my family and friends, they’re going to come out.”
