Charley Hoffman must see dollar signs every time he steps foot on the TPC San Antonio grounds.

It’s surprising to see he’s only got one Texas Open title from 2016, but that doesn’t tell the whole story. Competing every year since 2010 (save for 2020 when the event was canceled), Hoffman is 11-for-11 making the cut with three runner-ups, a third, and nine total finishes of T-13th or better.

That’s staggering stuff, especially for a guy who’s never been a superstar in the game.

“It fits my eye. You’ve got to shape tee shots. You’ve got to be in certain spots hitting iron shots into the green,” Hoffman was transcribed by Tee Scripts in 2021. “I guess it just fits my eye and I really enjoy playing this golf course. You’ve got to hit right to left, left to right and make a few putts, and I’ve been able to do that so far and throughout my career.”

Two of Hoffman’s runner-ups came in 2019 (71-68-64-67) and 2021 (75-66-65-66), each time coming up two shots shy of the winner.

Last year, the UNLV alum was second in the field in strokes gained tee to green (13.241) and was top-15 in all SG categories. If not for a poor start on Thursday, he would’ve been throwing on the winner’s boots on Sunday.

Hoffman is hopeful for more good vibes at the Texas Open in 2022

He will hope that a good performance this week will help rid the sour taste from last year.

He’s yet to crack the top 20 in the 2021-22 season and has been most known for his Instagram comments at the WM Phoenix Open after he received what he thought was an unfavorable ruling. He proceeded to rip the PGA Tour and USGA and tagged in his post folks aligned with the emerging Saudi golf league.

Hoffman has largely stayed out of the spotlight since then.

He’s traditionally played well at the Masters’ but is not qualified unless he wins the Valero Texas Open.

I’m not quite ready to predict that, but it’s hard not to see the ultimate horse for the course putting it together at his favorite venue.
