Scottie Scheffler returned to the WGC-Dell Match Play Championship in Austin, Texas, this year with unfinished business. After coming up short in last year’s final match against Billy Horschel, Scheffler entered the contest confident and determined to take down anyone in his path.

This confidence would prove key, as three former winners here at Austin Country Club would stand in his way throughout the knockout stage. Let’s take a closer look at three of the key matchups on Scottie Scheffler’s road to victory in 2022.

The first round of the knockout stage began with a bang, as Scottie Scheffler faced off against Billy Horschel in a rematch of last year’s final. After a bogey on hole one, Scheffler was able to bounce back and right the ship for a hard-fought victory – a back and forth affair in which neither player led by more than one hole at any point.

This would avenge last year’s 2 and 1 finals defeat, boosting the 25 year old’s confidence heading further into the bracket. After handily defeating Seamus Power in the quarterfinal, Scheffler went head to head with 2017 Dell Match Play winner Dustin Johnson in the semifinal match.

Johnson, currently ranked eighth in the world, had been crushing his driver all weekend, had just defeated Brooks Koepka, and was looking to carry that momentum into the next round. Scottie Scheffler quickly squashed that notion, taking three of the first four holes on his way to a decisive 3 & 1 victory, in which he led the entire match.

Scottie Scheffler had one last test to overcome

Scheffler’s final test would be Kevin Kisner, who found himself in the championship round for the third time in the last four years that the event has been held. Both Austin Country Club and the match play format suit Kisner’s game perfectly, and many expected the final to be a shootout.

There would be no fireworks, however, as Scheffler jumped out to another early lead on hole two, and never looked back – finishing four up with three holes to play for his third win of the 2022 season.

Next. Decade by decade, the best of the Masters. dark

They say to be the best, you have to beat the best, and Scottie Scheffler took down three proven winners in Austin this weekend, on his way to being crowned the number one ranked golfer in the world.
