Imagining The Best and Worst Case Scenarios For 10 At The Masters
6. Viktor Hovland
Best Case: Who needs a good short game when you can hit every green in regulation? that is Hovland’s motto at the 2022 Masters as he hits nearly every green this week. Viktor finishes the week ranked 1st in strokes gained approach, and he improves his season percentage from 71.90 to over 80% of greens hit in regulation for the week. The putter doesn’t need to be great, just solid, and that is what happens as he makes numerous 10-15 foot birdie putts all week long. The 2022 Masters winner takes some of the best photos as a champion at Augusta of all time. His charismatic grin doesn’t vanish for even a moment as he smiles the entire week.
Worst Case: Hovland ends his 2022 Masters with his best-ever finish at Augusta as he records a 12th place finish when all is said and done. His woeful short game rears its ugly head once again as he loses multiple strokes around the green for the sixth time in his last seven starts. One too many mistakes prove costly and too much to overcome this year at Augusta for Viktor.
7. Rory McIlroy
Best Case: The world rejoices as McIlroy at long last completes the career grand slam, he has always had the talent to accomplish something that has only been achieved by five others in the history of the sport, and in 2022 he puts it all together.
Rory has all cylinders of his game clicking during the week, he crushes the ball with authority off the tee, is dialed in with his irons and wedges, and the putter even works for the Northern Irishman. He has been threatening throughout 2022 to put it all together at once and it finally happens at the perfect time. You can’t wipe the smile off of McIlroy’s face as he dons the green jacket come Sunday.
Worst Case: Last weeks missed cut at the Valero Texas Open and the missed cut at Augusta last year weigh heavily on Rory’s mind as he begins the 86th playing of the Masters. The week isn’t all bad for the Northern Irishman as he makes the cut and is even in contention for a while, but as so often has been the case it is the one bad round that gets him yet again.
McIlroy makes a late charge up the leaderboard on Sunday and manages another top 10 finish, but once again it is a case of what-if, what if he had played four consistent rounds without the killer mistake?.
