Masters Champions Dinner: A Breakdown of Hideki’s Menu
After withdrawing from the Valero Texas Open in San Antonio, Hideki Matsuyama had a busy week before teeing off at The Masters. He’d have to write and recite a champion’s speech in front of a room full of former Masters champions, in his second language no less.
On top of that, he was responsible for choosing the dinner menu, and by all accounts, he knocked both out of the park.
A breakdown of what was on the menu Tuesday for the former Masters champions
Appetizers
Assorted Sushi, Sashimi and Nigiri
Yakitori Chicken Skewers
This is not the first time we have seen sushi on the menu at the Masters Champions Dinner, as Tiger Woods’ most recent menu included a sushi roll aptly named “The Augusta Roll.” The chicken skewers are a nice option for the less adventurous eaters in attendance.
Miso Glazed Black Cod
Dashi Broth
Miso is a staple in Japanese cooking and is associated with many health benefits. Dashi forms the base for miso soup, with the two primary ingredients being seaweed and bonito flakes. All put together, this seems to be an extremely well thought out and cohesive dish.
Miyazaki Wagyu
A5 Wagyu Beef Ribeye with Mixed Mushrooms & Vegetables
Sansho Daikon Ponzu
Former Masters champs Jordan Spieth and Dustin Johnson both mentioned they were looking forward to the main course of Wagyu beef when asked about the menu.
Spieth went as far as to say “I might make a lot of people mad in the state of Texas, but it’s the best beef I’ve ever had” when referencing trying the steak during a trip to Japan.
Wagyu is one of the most expensive varieties of steak, costing anywhere between $10 and $30 an ounce. Ponzu is a traditional Japanese dressing that is essentially a citrusy soy sauce.
Japanese Strawberry Shortcake
Fluffy Sponge Cake with Whipped Cream and Amaou Strawberries
Amaou strawberries are considered to be the “king” of Japanese strawberries, and surely made for a fantastic shortcake. They aren’t cheap either, as a single berry can cost up to ten dollars!
