The 2022 Masters gave us some incredible stories and highlights, but there were also several who disappointed this past week at Augusta National.

Scottie Scheffler put an emphatic exclamation point on why he is the World’s number one player this week. He was in complete control for the majority of the week on his way to earning his first Major championship and fourth win of 2022.

Remember back in early February when he hadn’t won a PGA event? That is something that is hard to fathom after the last eight weeks, and at this point, it looks like it will be a surprise when he doesn’t win an event.

There were plenty of incredible storylines at the year’s first Major including the miraculous return of Tiger Woods, Cameron Smith’s continued exceptional play, Rory McIlroy’s incredible Sunday, and of course Scottie Scheffler’s dominant performance. Just to name a few.

It wasn’t all sunshine and roses though, there were plenty of names that disappointed this week. Let’s take a look back at a few of those.

Biggest Disappointments From The 2022 Masters

Jon Rahm

Sure, he made the cut and posted another ho-hum top 30 finish in an event, but the Spaniard also was never really in contention this week. His finish at the 2022 Masters was his worst finish in six starts at Augusta National and his first finish outside of the top 10 here since 2017. The World number three continues to look like he is not at his best, he has one top 5 finish (Farmers) in 2022 and he hasn’t won since last June.

Winning is hard, but not contending this week will be seen as a disappointment for the talented Rahm.

Patrick Cantlay

Patrick Cantlay sandwiched two rough rounds with a couple of decent rounds this week at the Masters. The 2021 FedEx Cup winner opened with a 70 on Thursday and he was very much in contention at the end of day one.

You wouldn’t have been wrong for expecting a player as talented as Patrick to continue and climb his way up the leaderboard as the week went on, but that isn’t what happened. He followed a nice opening round on Thursday with a 75, three over Par round, on Friday.

Cantlay would comfortably make the weekend in the end, but Saturday was by far his worst round of the week. A 79 on Saturday swiftly ended any dreams of contending for the green jacket in 2022. Patrick recorded six bogey’s on his back nine to finish off a rough third round. A 71 on Sunday was a bit better, but he still would go on to finish his 2022 Masters in 39th, this after such a promising start.

After starting 2022 with some great results Patrick Cantlay has lost his way a bit of late, his best finish coming at the WGC-Dell Match Play where he finished T-26th, despite the fact that he did not advance from his group in Austin. It will be interesting to see if Patrick can turn his season around in the coming weeks.

Jordan Spieth

It is a testament to how great Jordan Spieth has been at the Masters that he makes this list. The 2015 Masters Champion missed his first-ever cut at Augusta National this week. Spieth opened with a 74, two over Par round, on Thursday.

He still had a very good chance of making the weekend this year as he opened his second round at one-under through nine holes on Friday. In the end, though, it was two holes on the back nine that ended his week as the memorable 12th would haunt him once again. Jordan found the water twice on the Par 3 as he went on to make a triple-bogey.

Another double on the closing hole was just the icing on the cake for Jordan as it solidified the fact that he wouldn’t be around for the weekend. The three-time Major Champion has just one top 20 finish in 2022, and he would have been hoping to find some more magic at Augusta this week. Instead, he missed the cut for the first time and will still be searching for answers as the year rolls on.

Brooks Koepka

Koepka missed the cut this week at the Masters for the second year in a row. A solid start on Thursday through nine holes quickly turned into a nightmare on the back nine as he would go on to record five bogey’s down the stretch.

Brooks would struggle again on the back nine on Friday as he added another three bogeys to his tally, a sequence that resulted in him missing the weekend at the Masters after shooting six over Par through two rounds. Koepka finished his 2022 Masters having shot eight over Par on the back nine at Augusta National for the week.

Having more top 10s than missed cuts at Augusta National is something that he will no longer be able to lay claim to. The four-time Major winner will always have much expected of him in these big events, and while he has been terrific at the other three majors in recent years, he has certainly struggled at the Masters. All in all a disappointing week for Brooks as he didn’t even make the weekend.
