2022 RBC Heritage: Top 10 Power Rankings At Harbour Town
Justin Thomas is part of the cohort of players who notched a great result on paper at last week’s Masters, but who can’t say they truly contended for the green jacket.
Scottie Scheffler’s torrid pace was hard for anyone to match, but JT was among the best of the rest finishing T-8th and shaking off a tough start. Thomas posted 76 in round one to sit T-70th before fighting back with 67-72-72 and climbing into the top five for a time on Sunday.
This was his fourth top-10 in the last six starts.
“A lot of positives. I would say more positives than negatives,” Thomas was transcribed by ASAP Sports regarding what he’d take from the week at Augusta National. “I putted the ball great. This week I may have necessarily not holed a lot, but I definitely holed a lot outside of 10 feet, which is something we’ve been working on really hard. I hit a lot of great shots and had — made a lot of momentum kind of saving things and then felt like, like I said, after shooting 76 the first day and being in damn near last, to be in the third to last group on Sunday is as great — good stuff.”
Thomas is 3-for-3 making the cut at the RBC Heritage.
He posted his best tournament result the last time he attended in 2020.
He posted 72-66-66-63 to finish T-8th and just five shots back in that June edition filled with top players.
Thomas was second in the field in driving distance (304.9 yards), but he could not hit enough fairways (62.5%, T-96th) to contend Sunday. JT at least was 3-for-3 in sand saves.
The former Alabama Crimson Tide debuted at Harbour Town when he finished T-11th. He returned a year later for 75th.
This season, he’s fifth on the PGA Tour in strokes gained approach (.903) and 35th in SG around the green (.306). Thomas’ prowess off the tee is mitigated this week, but he’s talented enough to win with his iron play and short game.
JT leads the PGA Tour in approach proximity from 50-125 yards (13’) and 150-175 (20’4”). He’s also second from 125-150 (17’) and fourth from 175-200 (27’9”).
The missing ingredient is usually the putter. If he can get that going on Bermuda greens as he did in spurts in Georgia last week, watch out.
