2022 Zurich Classic of New Orleans: Top 10 Power Rankings
The last month of PGA Tour golf has given us a little bit of everything. Fans and players alike have been treated to a match play event in March, a major championship in April, and here later in the month, a two-man team event.
The Zurich Classic of New Orleans began in 1938 as a traditional stroke play tournament before making the switch to the current two-man team format in 2017.
Teams were determined by the top 80 players based on priority ranking having the choice to pick a partner or have a partner selected for them.
The top 33 teams make the 36-hole cut. The format features best ball in rounds one and three and alternate shot in rounds two and four.
TPC Louisana in Avondale, Louisiana, about 15 miles southwest of New Orleans, has hosted since 2005.
For the second straight week and fourth time in five weeks, the PGA Tour arrives to a Pete Dye course. That’s not a bad thing, though this course isn’t up there with some of his greats.
TPC Louisiana measures out to 7,425 yards and is a par 72. The course features Bermuda grass tee to green with the greens overseeded with poa trivialis and velvet bentgrass.
Good long-iron players can stand out at the Zurich Classic.
four par-5s are reachable and the par-3s are all 200-plus yards.
Players who play well in the Florida swing or in other southeastern U.S. events with Bermuda may have success around here.
This is typically a rainy time of the year in Louisiana and weather delays are not uncommon here. The course is generally soft and greens not overly challenging.
Low scores are out there.
World ranking points are not on the line this week. The $1.19 winner’s check is split both ways. Each winner receives 400 FedEx Cup points, down from 500 to the winner in a standard PGA Tour event.
This is a tough week to prognosticate given how many teams change year to year, as well as the fact that this is a one-off event.
I shall try my best, though.
