2022 Zurich Classic: Three Teams You Won’t Want To Miss
By Sean McCann
With this weekend’s Zurich Classic fast approaching, many are excited for yet another unique tournament that the PGA Tour features.
This two-man team, match play-style event will feature 5 of the top 6 players in the World, all looking to defeat the defending champions, Australians Cameron Smith and Marc Leishman. This tournament, founded in 1938, hosts the World’s best while encouraging comradery amongst typical competitors, offering a cool opportunity for fans to watch this style of play.
This week, there are plenty of talented groups that are capable of coming away victorious, including Morikawa & Hovland, or Cantlay & Schauffele. However, let’s take a closer look at 3 other groups with a sneaky-good chance of taking down the Australian pair:
Three groups to keep an eye on at the Zurich Classic

1. Ryan Palmer & Scottie Scheffler (+1000)
I mean, this one was easy. Scottie Scheffler is easily the best golfer in the world currently, coming off of his recent Masters victory. Ranked 1st in the World and FedEx Rankings, the 25-year-old has no flaws in his game, so look for him to carry the load, but also have a target on his back. Scheffler’s partner, Ryan Palmer, while struggling so far this season, remains top 50 on Tour in both Driving Distance (40th) and Strokes Gained Tee to Green (36th). With Palmer’s recent experience in this event alongside former World No. 1 Jon Rahm, his experience will benefit this team greatly.
2. Max Homa & Talor Gooch (+2500)
This pairing features two bright stars on the PGA Tour, both having exceptional 2021-22 seasons. Homa, who is currently 18th in FedEx Standings, hasn’t missed the cut in his last 5 tournaments, this includes four Top-15 finishes during that span. Talor Gooch, the 30-year-old American, is 5th in the FedEx standings thanks to his recent win at The RSM Classic, he has recorded four Top-10 finishes. Ranked 14th in Scoring Average, Gooch’s consistency should serve him well this weekend. If you’re looking for the most improved group in the field, you’ve found it.
3. Tyrell Hatton & Danny Willett (+2800)
Well, why not? Hatton, the World No. 21 golfer, hasn’t missed a cut this calendar year, a run of events that includes a T-2 finish at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and T-13 at the Players Championship. Hatton uses his elite putting game (1st on Tour in Strokes Gained Putting) in clutch moments, perfect for this week’s event. Englishmen Danny Willett, the 2016 Masters Champion, is coming off of three consecutive Top-50 finishes, including an impressive T-12 finish at this year’s Masters tournament. While they might not have the most skill in the field, they both play a fiery game and are capable of using their emotion to surprise on the big stage.
With another exciting and unique week of golf ahead, this week’s field will be looking to dethrone the Australian pairing and etch their own names in the Zurich Classic history books. There will be a lot of golf to watch, but if you want to focus on three groups that could catch fire and take down the field here at TPC Louisiana, look to these three.
