Don’t Expect Scottie Scheffler’s Historic Season to Stop
Scottie Scheffler is off to one of the hottest starts in recent PGA TOUR memory, but don’t expect him to slow down anytime soon.
When Scottie Scheffler won The Masters earlier this April, it was the exclamation point on his 2021-22 season. After winning three times in his previous five starts, while claiming the world No. 1, he was still somehow flying under the radar.
There was a certain player named Tiger Woods who returned from a 14-month layoff, which took all the attention off the 25-year-old.
Scheffler’s historic run was looked at as a hot start or a flash-in-the-pan, but he couldn’t really win the green jacket, right?
Wrong.
Not only did he win The Masters, but he dominated the field. From his final putt on Friday night to his comical four-putt to win the green jacket on Sunday, he was in total control of the golf tournament.
In terms of up-and-coming PGA TOUR superstars, Scottie Scheffler’s name was always on a shortlist, but the likes of Collin Morikawa, Will Zalatoris, and/or Viktor Hovland were viewed as players who would be more than likely to go on a streak like Scheffler just did.
However, nobody should really be shocked at his excellence. Although he’d never won on the PGA TOUR prior to this season, he had a number of top-five finishes, most notably finishing T4 at the 2020 PGA Championship.
Scheffler also finished T7 at the 2021 US Open and T8 at the 2021 Open Championship.
The Texas native has performed admirably in huge tournaments, so it was just a matter of time before he was going to breakout and win.
Scottie Scheffler’s Hot Streak Should Continue At Golf’s Next Major
After missing the cut at the 2019 PGA Championship, Scheffler has finished no worse than T19 in his last six major appearances. Even though he’s World No. 1 and his finishes have been nothing short of spectacular, he’s still probably going to be underrated heading into golf’s next major, although he shouldn’t be.
In a 2021 interview, Scottie Scheffler was asked about some of his favorite golf courses, and here’s what he had to say:
"“Obviously, (Augusta National) is incredible, but I have always been a huge fan of Southern Hills in Tulsa,…I haven’t had a chance to play it since the (2018-19) renovation yet, but I really liked it before.” (via: Tulsa World)"
Hmm, I wonder where the PGA Championship is taking place this year.
Yep, that’s right: Southern Hills in Tulsa.
There’s no such thing as a sure bet in sports, but Scheffler at one of his favorite courses, as the hottest player in the world seems like the smartest bet in golf, even if he currently is an 11-1 favorite to win the tournament.
A golfer can’t stay this hot forever, but ride the wave until it’s over because Scottie Scheffler’s winning streak should continue until, at least, the PGA Championship.
