It’s been feast or famine this season on the PGA Tour for Matt Jones.

The feast has been pretty substantial. The Aussie fired a whopping 32-under-par at the Sentry Tournament of Champions and somehow didn’t win. Jones settled for solo third place, finishing two off the pace.

The momentum was short-lived as he missed his next three cuts. The 42-year-old got back on the horse at the Genesis Invitational where he posted T-15th and contended again in his last start at the Texas Open where he was T-2nd.

Even with a 75 in round two in Texas, Jones battled back to finish just two shots off the lead.

While he’d like some more consistency, he’s likely thrilled to be in the top 40 in the FedEx Cup.

A Mexico Open win gives him a great chance at making it to East Lake.

The Arizona State alum ranks fifth on the PGA Tour this season in strokes gained around the green (.557). Even as an elder statesman out there, Jones still pumps drives out there at 306.5 yards per pop to rank 34th. He could afford to be more accurate, but that may not be as big of an issue at Vidanta Vallarta as at other courses on the schedule.

Jones is also eighth on the season in total eagles with 10.

He’s won twice on the PGA Tour as well as twice at the Australian Open in the last seven years. His experience contending could pay off this week competing against a rather weak field.

Not to mention, taking three weeks off after the Texas Open should have him primed to take on a new event and course.
