Who Thrived and Who Suffered Because of Their Zurich Classic Partnership?
By Bill Felber
Who carried whom at the 2022 Zurich Classic?
In the mood to feel some pity? Send it Bubba Watson’s way.
Watson partnered with Harold Varner III at the Zurich Classic. It was not a partnership made in heaven. The team tied for fourth place at 23-under, with Watson doing the bulk of the heavy lifting all week.
During Thursday’s best ball, the team turned in a 62 thanks almost entirely to Watson’s six birdies and an eagle. Varner contributed only two birdies.
In Friday’s alternate shot, the partnership suffered two bogeys, and Varner was the reason both times. He pulled his tee shot on the par 3 9th hole into the pond left of the green, then on 17 missed the green by 30 yards, setting up another bogey.
For the week, Watson was responsible for 73.9 percent of the team’s 23-under score, leaving the Varner portion of the partnership just 26 percent of the credit.
Dylan Wu had a similar experience. A tour rookie, Wu might have contended for the championship…if this were any individual event. Wu played well enough, particularly during the best ball rounds. He made seven birdies on Thursday and another seven on Saturday, contributing -16.3 to his team’s -22.
Unfortunately, he was partnered with fellow rookie Justin Lower, who had a less stellar week at the Zurich Classic. As a result, the partnership finished only at 22-under, tied for 10th, with Wu doing a prodigious 74.1 percent of the work.
