The month of April saw a number of notable tournaments come and go on the PGA Tour calendar, providing us with plenty of action and drama. We saw American Scottie Scheffler overtake Jon Rahm for the No. 1 rank in the World, thanks in large part to his historic Masters victory.

Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay also made history at the Zurich Classic with their victory at -29, a tournament record. Each week presented a different storyline, leaving fans with no rest throughout the month.

It seems like the month of May will be no different, with each weekend showcasing an important tournament with FedEx Cup implications. Fans even get another Major tournament to look forward to, one that may see the return of some veteran stars.

Let’s preview what to expect in the month of May and take a detailed look at each of next month’s biggest events:

Previewing May’s Action-Packed PGA Tour Events

Mexico Open at Vidanta

April 28th – May 2nd

Vidanta Vallarta, Mexico

Purse: $7.3 million

Previous Winner: N/A

The PGA Tour recently added this tournament, making it the second one that will take place in Mexico. Notables in the field this week include Jon Rahm, his first appearance since the Masters, Tony Finau, Patrick Reed, and hometown countrymen Abraham Ancer.

Wells Fargo Championship

May 5th – 8th

TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm, Maryland

Purse: $9 million

Previous Winner: Rory McIlroy

This was seemingly McIlroy’s last notable victory when he narrowly defeated Abraham Ancer and Viktor Hovland in the final round last year. After losing his ball on the 72nd hole, McIlroy battled to preserve his 1-stroke victory. It was his third victory at Quail Hollow, so we’ll have to see how the defending champion fairs this time around at a new venue as Quail Hollow prepares for the upcoming Presidents Cup later this year.

AT&T Byron Nelson

May 12th – 16th

TPC Craig Ranch, Texas

Purse: $9.1 million

Previous Winner: K.H. Lee

This still stands as K.H. Lee’s only victory on the PGA Tour so far, and it came in dominating fashion. Lee did not shoot higher than a 67 all week, finishing at a shocking -25, three strokes ahead of American Sam Burns. As the final chance to prepare for the PGA Championship some may elect to use the week to finalize preparations, while others may take the chance to rest ahead of the year’s second Major at Southern Hills.

PGA Championship

May 19th – 23rd

Southern Hills Country Club, Oklahoma

Purse: $20 million

Previous Winner: Phil Mickelson

It’s the second major of the year and it seems like we may get to see both Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson in the field here, this coming after both had taken notable time away from the PGA Tour over the last year. This course can cause problems for many and it will be interesting to see if someone not named Scottie Scheffler can take home the title.

Charles Schwab Challenge

May 26th – 30th

Colonial Country Club, Texas

Purse: $8.4 million

Previous Winner: Jason Kokrak

While it wasn’t pretty, Jason Kokrak shot an even-70 in his final round to defeat a surging Jordan Spieth for his second PGA Victory. The week was massive for both Kokrak and Spieth, jumping them all the way up to 5th and 2nd in the FedEx Cup standings respectively. Colonial Country Club, while only being a par-70, presents itself as a rather long course. It includes the mammoth 635 yard, Par-5, 11th hole. Look out for some of the PGA Tour’s big hitters to dominate at the Charles Schwab Challenge in 2022.

With 5 tournaments in 5 weeks, there’s plenty of buzz and anticipation about the month of May, both for the players and their fans. A combined purse of $53.8 million and 2600 winning FedEx Cup Points are up for grabs, so I wouldn’t expect any golfer to be taking much time off in the month of May. Hang on, because this month is going to be fun!
