The Resurgence Of Jordan Spieth And How He Revived His Career
By Sean McCann
At one time, Jordan Spieth was widely regarded as one of the best golfers in the World.
Dominating the PGA Tour at a young age, the future seemed bright for the young American. However, Spieth began to fade as he struggled to maintain his success, and eventually, he fell out of the spotlight. Fast forward to today and we’ve witnessed the resurgence of Spieth’s career, much to the delight of fans across the globe. The question remains though, what changed with Jordan Spieth? What helped this incredible comeback?
In 2015, Spieth was only 22 years old, yet he instantly became a force on the PGA Tour. The American won the 2015 FedEx Cup, thanks to his shocking 5 wins and 15 top-15 finishes that season, including the Tour Championship. To keep it short, Jordan Spieth dominated the field, finishing almost 1,500 points ahead of the second-place finisher, Swedish golfer Henrik Stenson. Oh, and the 2015 victory also came with a cool $22 million dollar payday. It quickly became evident that we were watching one of the Tour’s brightest stars, but struggles began to creep up.
Jordan Spieth struggled after his historic 2015 season
Following the historic 2015 season, Jordan Spieth began to slip away from the spotlight. The worst of it came between 2017-and 2020 when the American failed to win a single tournament. In 2020, Spieth finished a disappointing 107th in the FedEx Cup Standings.
That season, he was 161st on Tour from Tee to Green, a statistic that Spieth was once the best in the world in. It became clear that his confidence was gone and as a result, it led to both poor performances and a multitude of missed cuts. While still young, many were unsure if we hadn’t already seen the best of the Dallas, Texas, native.
As the 2021 season began, something changed in Spieth’s game. It seemed as if his confidence was back and in turn, his name began to appear on more and more leaderboards, bringing with it increasing excitement and anticipation from golf fans. He got closer and closer to securing his first victory since 2017, and finally, it happened. Jordan Spieth won the 2021 Valero Texas Open by 2 strokes over Charley Hoffman, and just like that he was back. Since that victory, Jordan Spieth has been playing like he did in 2015 and he has re-established himself once again as one of the brightest talents on the PGA Tour.
Jordan Spieth and the return to greatness
This season, the American is currently 11th in the FedEx Cup Standings and is back amongst the top-10 in the Official World Golf Rankings. He recently won the RBC Heritage in a playoff against another young American, Patrick Cantlay. Jordan Spieth is back up to 19th on Tour in Strokes Gained Tee to Green, along with 11th in Driving Distance, and 1st on Tour in scrambling from the rough. With a consistently strong game in tow across the board, Jordan seems to have found a groove once again and seems happy with the current state of his game.
“I believe in myself as somebody who when he needs to make the putt, will make the putt,” he said.
I think that I speak for many when I say the PGA Tour is more exciting when Jordan Spieth and his electric personality are in contention each weekend. The American lost his game in 2015 but has found it once again, surging up the rankings and winning once again.
After missing the cut at the recent Masters, Jordan Spieth now looks forward to the upcoming PGA Championship where he will be hoping to win a 5th Major and complete the illustrious career ‘Grand Slam’.
