2022 Wells Fargo Championship: Top 10 Power Rankings at TPC Potomac
Rory McIlroy is happy to defend his Wells Fargo Championship title, but it won’t be at the same course.
McIlroy earned a one-shot victory at Quail Hollow Club last year, which is hosting the Presidents Cup this fall.
That was one of two wins for the Northern Irishman in 2021. McIlroy hasn’t got in the winner’s circle in 2022, but he earned a runner-up finish in his last start at the Masters. That’s one of three top-10s in seven worldwide starts this year.
Rory is trying to keep the momentum going this week at the Wells Fargo Championship
Will his performance at Augusta National, particularly his Sunday 64 that was one off the course record, be a springboard for the rest of the year and into the heart of major championship season?
“I don’t think I’ve ever walked away from this tournament as happy as I am today,” McIlroy was quoted in his press conference by ASAP Sports. “I’ve played a really good round of golf, and it’s my best ever finish at Augusta. It’s not quite enough, but I’ll certainly look back on this day with very fond memories. And as I said at the start, it just gives me — it gives me confidence going forward not only into the next Masters next year but to the rest of the season as well.”
The 32-year-old is making his first trip to TPC Potomac.
It’s arguable the former world No. 1 should win at a higher clip. Nonetheless, he rarely bottoms out week-to-week and has just four missed cuts in the last two years.
With three weeks to prepare and a weak field going up against him, this is a green-light situation for McIlroy to win like Jon Rahm just did in Mexico.
He doesn’t have enough rounds recorded by Shotlink to qualify for PGA Tour statistical ranks. In 18 rounds, he’s gaining strokes in every category and 1.595 per round, which would rank seventh if he was eligible. Rors would be ninth in SG tee to green (1.349).
