Tony Finau capitalized on a weak field and a bomber’s ballpark at the Mexico Open to get his groove back.

A scorching 8-under 63 to tie the course record on Sunday vaulted him to a T-2nd finish at Vidanta Vallarta. It never quite felt like enough down the stretch to win, but it at least forced eventual champion, Jon Rahm, to avoid mistakes en route to his one-shot victory.

Finau made three of his last four stroke play cuts leading in, but he lacked a top-10 this season.

Nearly toppling the world’s No. 2 player can be a confidence booster.

“I’ve been hitting it really nicely all week. My iron play has been exceptional,” Finau was quoted by Tee Scripts. “I made some adjustments kind of before Augusta and I’m kind of seeing the fruits of it now a few weeks later now.”

Finau led the field in Mexico in total strokes gained tee to green (14.76) and greens in regulation (83.33%), which gave him a chance to win despite a cold putter. He only found two bunkers all week and got up and down both times.

This season, the 32-year-old American ranks eighth on the PGA Tour in SG approach (.817), seventh in proximity from the fairway (28’11”), and 11th in greens in regulation (70.83%).

Finau earned T-29th (69-75-69-68) at the 2017 Quicken Loans National and ranked 15th that week in total strokes gained off the tee (3.126).
