A big reason Abraham Ancer kept his PGA Tour card as a rookie in 2017-18 was for his performance at TPC Potomac.

Ancer posted his best result of the season, carding rounds of 65-70-62-72 for T-4th at the 2018 Quicken Loans National. He was tied with Francesco Molinari after 54 holes, but the duo went in opposite directions as Frankie fired 62 for an eight-shot romp.

Kevin Streelman also shot 62 in 2018, which is the course record.

It was still a momentum-building week for a guy fresh off the Korn Ferry Tour and with no top-40s in his previous seven starts. Ancer was also in contention alongside Tiger Woods, who also finished T-4th.

Ancer assessed TPC Potomac as a stern test of golf.

“It’s a good course,” Ancer said in a transcription by Tee Scripts. “You’ve got to hit it really good. If you’re on with your irons, you can score, but if you’re a little bit off, man, it gets tough.”

The Oklahoma alum went on to comfortably keep his card and advance to the BMW Championship in the FedEx Cup Playoffs.

His ascent has continued since then, culminating last summer with his first career PGA Tour victory at the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational. Ancer made the cut (T-42nd) last week at the Mexico Open and has a pair of top-10s worldwide in 2022.

The 31-year-old ranks sixth on the PGA Tour in driving accuracy (69.35%). He’s not a big hitter, but that’s not as big of a detriment this week.
