Some players can get ahead of themselves or be too preoccupied to play well in their home state.

Jordan Spieth relishes it.

He tends to show off when in the Lone Star State. He’s got two wins in the Lone Star State and a bevy of top-10s.

Spieth has checked off wins at the Texas Open and Colonial. He’d like to add the AT&T Byron Nelson to the list.

Despite TPC Craig Ranch not being an ideal course fit, Spieth played well here in 2021. He fired an opening 63 to share the 18-hole lead and followed with 69-72-73 to finish T-9th.

He was top-10 in the field in strokes gained approach and tee to green.

“If the wind doesn’t blow, you really are kind of looking at trying to go score,” Spieth said of TPC Craig Ranch in a 2021 ASAP Sports transcription. “Then when it does, you’re almost kind of holding on and saying, all right, I want to take advantage of the par-5s but the rest of the course is going to be really tough. It’s got really hard par-3s.”

We last saw Spieth raise a trophy at the RBC Heritage. He didn’t have his ‘A’ game, but he grinded out a good closing round on Sunday to get in the clubhouse and let the competition crumble.

Spieth got into a playoff and showed his clutch ways by hitting a bunker shot to tap-in range for par to oust Patrick Cantlay.

The win at Harbour Town was just the rebound Spieth Nation wanted to see.

It came just a week after a disappointing missed cut at the Masters.

Along with the win, he also has a solo second-place finish at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

Spieth has had a good ball-striking season. He’s 21st in SG tee to green (1.05) and is up from 66th (299.5) to 38th (3) in driving distance (306.2).

If Spieth can get his putter rolling even partly as well as it was during his mid-2010s heyday, he’ll be a force to be reckoned with.
