Rory McIlroy is ready to take on Southern Hills in just over a week’s time at the 104th PGA Championship.

Some of the biggest names in the game are heading to TPC Craig Ranch this week for the 2022 AT&T Byron Nelson in what will be the final tune-up opportunity before next week’s PGA Championship.

Rory McIlroy is not amongst that group of players heading to Texas this week, the Northern Irishman just completed a tough week at the 2022 Wells Fargo Championship where playing conditions were much more in line with what can be expected at the PGA Championship.

The four-time Major winner has played just once since his incredible closing round at the Masters in early April, and yet he seems happy with where his game is at heading into the second Major of the year.

“Yeah, I’m playing good, playing really good. No complaints with the game. Everything feels pretty solid,” Mcllroy said following his final round at the Wells Fargo Championship on Sunday.

Rory Mcllroy put in another solid performance over the weekend as he finished 5th at TPC Potomac. He was defending the title that he had won last year albeit at a different course in 2022. The change of venue didn’t seem to bother Rory as he turned out yet another top 10 finish, McIlroy has played eight times this year and has recorded top 10 finishes in half of those starts.

As for his first experience at TPC Potomac? Rory McIlroy left this past weekend extremely impressed with the place.

“It’s a very, very good golf course. I’m so impressed with how the course has held up under the conditions the last few days. Greens are perfect. I mean, the fairways today were not really soggy at all, wasn’t really many mud balls. We probably could have played the ball down today, which is insane considering that the conditions we’ve had. Really impressed overall,” he said.

Mcllroy plans to spend a week at home before heading to Southern Hills next weekend. He won twice on Tour in 2021, first at the Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow last year, then at the CJ Cup last October.

Rory McIlroy is still in search of his first Major Championship win since 2014.

The two-time PGA Championship winner is still in search of his first win at a Major since 2014 and he will go into this year’s 104th playing of the PGA Championship in great form once again. Last year Rory headed to the PGA Championship at Kiawah on the back of his win at the Wells Fargo, this year he will head to Southern Hills on the back of a 2nd and 5th place finish in his two previous starts.

Things didn’t go so well last year for McIlroy as he was aiming to win once again at Kiawah as he had done at the 2012 PGA Championship. Rory finished 49th at the Major last year. He will be hoping for a better outcome this time around.

Of the four Major Championships, it is the PGA that has given Rory McIlroy the most trouble in recent years. The 33-year-old has recorded just one top 10 finish at the historic event dating back to his win in 2014. That came back in the 2019 PGA Championship at Bethpage where McIlroy finished 8th.

Still, signs are encouraging that he can turn that all around at Southern Hills next week and Rory himself seems pleased with the state of his game stating “I’m really happy with where my game is.”

Let’s hope he can continue his run of good form at the year’s second Major Championship next week and mount a serious challenge at this year’s PGA Championship.
