Denied! PGA Tour Rejects Requests To Play LIV Golf Invitational Series
The PGA Tour has reportedly denied players’ requests to play the LIV Golf event in London.
It has been the topic of great debate and discussion for months on end now, the emergence of a rival Tour, or league, however you wish to spin it. The Saudi-backed, Greg Norman-led, LIV Golf Invitational series is set to get underway in London early next month.
As reported by Golfweek, it was largely thought that requests to play in the series of eight events over the next few months would be granted to players who wished to participate. Turns out, that isn’t the case as the PGA has reportedly rejected any such request.
It was just last weekend that Sergio Garcia added his name to the growing chatter surrounding the LIV Golf series after he had let his emotions get the better of him during the Wells Fargo Championship. The Spaniard had cried out ‘I can’t wait to leave this Tour’ after a rules official made an error in judgment that resulted in Garcia being penalized.
Sergio Garcia and several others had requested permission to play in the LIV Golf Invitational Series.
It hadn’t yet been made public as to which players exactly had specifically filed for the special waiver request to play in the LIV Golf Invitational series. Sergio Garcia and Lee Westwood though were two of the names that had made their intentions public.
Westwood had let it be known that he was looking forward to the opportunity to be playing in England in front of the home fans in June after announcing he was seeking a release.
There had also been plenty of chatter revolving around Phil Mickelson after all the drama that has surrounded him throughout much of this year. Phil Mickelson was another big-name player who had previously announced his intentions were to participate in the event held in London. The 2021 PGA Championship winner made the official announcement late last month.
The LIV Golf Invitational series is set to begin in London and has plans to play its second event in Portland, Oregon, in July. It had also been announced that a series finale will take place at Trump Doral in October and will feature a 50 million dollar prize. It remains to be seen what the fallout of this latest announcement will be, but it certainly appears as though the drama that has surrounded all of this will not be going away anytime soon.
