2022 PGA Championship: Top 10 Power Rankings at Southern Hills
Since his disappointing missed cut at the Masters, Jordan Spieth nearly won both events he teed it up in.
He did bounce back for a victory the week after at the RBC Heritage. Starting Sunday at Harbour Town three shots back, Spieth fired a closing 66 and watched as everyone around him crumbled. Spieth proceeded to beat Patrick Cantlay in a playoff.
Spieth took a few weeks off and nearly got back on the horse last week at the AT&T Byron Nelson. In his home event, Spieth was in the final group Sunday just a shot off the pace.
He led for a chunk of the final round in his hometown event, but the Texan fell just short a shot back in second place. It was still his highest finish at this event he once debuted at when he was 16.
Spieth was second in the field in strokes gained tee to green (11.686). He made no double bogeys or worse all week and just six bogeys total.
It’s been a bit of an up and down season, especially with the putter. Still, he also has a runner-up finish at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, so his highs have been pretty high.
The 28-year-old arrives at the 104th PGA Championship seeking the career Grand Slam.
The former Texas Longhorn missed out on playing this venue when it hosted Big 12 Championships in 2015 and 2018. Spieth did make the trip out to Tulsa last week to do some scouting with Justin Thomas.
Spieth made all four cuts in the majors last year, including T-3rd at the Masters and second at the Open Championship. He’s also made 13 of his last 14 major cuts and 30 of 36.
Spieth has made the weekend seven times in a row at the PGA Championship. His closest call was in 2015 when he finished second in a duel with Jason Day.
This PGA Tour season, Spieth ranks 12th on the PGA Tour in SG tee to green (1.277). A good short game appears to be a necessity this week. We know he’s got all the recovery shots and he’s 10th in scrambling (68.12%).
