Young Will Zalatoris continues to shine in the biggest moments and once again he finds himself in contention at a Major championship.

The 25-year-old is building quite the reputation for shining the brightest in the biggest moments and once again Will Zalatoris finds himself near the top of the leaderboard in a Major, this time at the 104th PGA Championship at Southern Hills.

One week after missing the cut at the AT&T Byron Nelson, Zalatoris recorded his lowest ever career round in a Major championship, something which is pretty impressive considering the reputation the talented young player has already built for himself on golf’s biggest stage.

Will Zalatoris won the 2014 US Junior Amateur Championship four years before turning professional in 2018. It didn’t take long for Will to announce his presence at the next level either after he finished fourth at the 2020 U.S. Open held at Winged Foot.

An incredible 2nd place finish at the 2021 Masters followed soon after for Zalatoris and it was at this point that the 2021 PGA rookie of the year was well and truly on the general public’s radar. He would then go on to post another top 10 finish at last year’s PGA Championship before having to withdraw in his first British Open appearance later that summer.

Very few players have been better than Will Zalatoris in Majors since 2020

The second time around Augusta National last month was another spectacular showing for Will, who currently ranks as the 30th best player in the World. Four rounds of 71, 72, 75, and 67 culminated in a 6th place finish at this year’s Masters. A showing that only added to an impressive, continually growing, Major championship resume. In fact, very few players have been better in golf’s biggest events since 2020 as Justin Ray pointed out:

Zalatoris is still searching for his first PGA Tour win since turning professional and it would seem as though he is equally as close to making his first win since turning pro a Major victory. The talented young player’s year to date has been highlighted by finishes of 2nd at the Farmers Insurance Open, where he arguably should have won, a 5th place finish at the WGC-Dell Match Play, and the aforementioned 6th place result in the year’s first Major.

Next. When Southern Hills witnessed true Major pressure. dark

The opening 66 during the first round of the 2022 PGA Championship at Southern Hills currently sees Zalatoris in a share of second, just one shot behind current leader Rory McIlroy after the early wave went out. Another Major championship appearance looks as though it will be another excellent week for Will Zalatoris. Perhaps this is the week he finally breaks through, wouldn’t that be something?.
