2022 Memorial Tournament: Top 10 Power Rankings at Muirfield Village
A flood of emotions must be going through Jon Rahm’s head this week.
He returns to Muirfield Village, site of his win at the 2020 Memorial Tournament. The Spaniard was on pace to defend his title last year until a positive Covid test forced his withdrawal after leading by six shots through 54 holes.
Rahm was set to strengthen his grip on the No. 1 spot in the world rankings and ride momentum into the upcoming U.S. Open.
Instead, he was forced to quarantine and perhaps even miss some or all of the U.S. Open a couple of weeks later. As we all know, Rahm tested negative in time to get to Torrey Pines where he won his first major championship in dramatic fashion.
That’s the definition of turning a negative into a positive. Or a positive test into a positive!
In total. Rahm’s teed it up four times at Muirfield Village. He earned T-27th at the 2020 Workday Charity Open and stayed on property to win the Memorial a week later by three with scores of 69-67-68-75.
Rahm’s win in Dublin in 2020 came in firm and fast conditions.
This was what he had to say about the course redesign that took place after the 2020 Memorial.
“…the redesign’s made it at least one to two strokes harder, but when the greens are receptive like now and you can fire at every single pin,” Rahm was transcribed by ASAP Sports.
The 27-year-old is leading the tour in strokes gained off the tee (1.37). That advantage helps every week, but especially at a long course like this with long rough. He’s also first in greens in regulation (72.15%) and second in SG tee to green (1.701).
Rahm is a recent winner at the Mexico Open and has made 10 straight cuts.
