2022 Memorial Tournament: Top 10 Power Rankings at Muirfield Village
It’s perfectly reasonable to place an asterisk next to Patrick Cantlay’s win at the 2021 Memorial Tournament. He went from just hoping to give Jon Rahm a scare trailing by six shots heading into Sunday to being right in the mix tied at the top after Rahm’s sudden departure due to a positive Covid test.
To Cantlay’s credit, he went out and won it on Sunday. Only five players broke 70 in the final round, so his closing 71 stood up well and got him into a playoff with Collin Morikawa. Cantlay polished him off on the first extra hole.
When he’s at his best, Cantlay has all the tools.
He was top 20 in the field in every strokes gained category, including first from tee to green (14.284). The former UCLA Bruin also led in greens in regulation (75%).
“One of the things I like about this golf course is it’s pretty straightforward once you get to know it,” Cantlay was quoted by ASAP Sports in 2019. “You know when you hit a good shot, and good shots are rewarded; and bad shots, they’re bad shots. It’s going to be hard to scramble and make pars.”
It was Cantlay’s second Memorial victory. In 2019, he fired 68-69-68-64 to win by two over Adam Scott in second, by four over third place, and by six over fourth. Cantlay is 6-for-6 making the cut at Muirfield Village with a fourth-place finish at the 2018 Memorial and T-7th at the 2020 Workday Charity Open.
Cantlay was a recent winner alongside Xander Schauffele at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans. It’s one of six top-10s that include runner-up finishes at the WM Phoenix Open and RBC Heritage.
A missed cut in his last start at the PGA Championship is one of few blemishes on the season.
The 30-year-old is gaining strokes in every SG category this season and is 21st in total SG (1.203). Cantlay is fourth in birdie average (4.59) and second in par-5 scoring (4.43).
