There are few tournaments Rory McIlroy’s played more and not won than the Memorial.

That’s not to say he’s coming to Muirfield Village and scoring in the 80s. In fact, this sets up as a great spot for him to finally get it done in Dublin.

In 10 appearances, the Northern Irishman owns four top-10s, six top-20s, and eight made cuts.

Last year, McIlroy posted 72-71-72-72 to take T-18th. He putted well on these bent grass greens (14th in strokes gained) but was missing his best stuff off the tee and in his short game.

McIlroy enters this week’s Memorial Tournament trending upward.

The weight of another missed opportunity at the PGA Championship (8th) must be a stressor, but he shouldn’t lose sight of the fact he recorded his third straight top-10.

That includes a runner-up at the Masters and a fifth at the Wells Fargo Championship. McIlroy won last fall at the CJ Cup and has five top-10s in the 2021-22 PGA Tour season as well as another top-10 in 2022 on the DP World Tour.

The 33-year-old ranks third on the PGA Tour in SG off the tee (.916) and SG tee to green (1.635). He’s going to give himself tons of chances approaching greens, it’ll just be a matter of how he can capitalize with his irons.

McIlroy is 10th in proximity from 125-150 yards (20’5”) but dips significantly from other adjacent yardage ranges.

Fortunately, his putter has been reliable this season at 34th in SG (.329) and no misses from three feet and in.

“You have to drive it in the fairway, especially this week,” McIlroy was transcribed by ASAP Sports in 2019. “The rough is very thick. And I’ve had — shot some good scores and had some good finishes around here. It suits me well. I think three of the best five putting rounds on Tour I’ve had here. I like the greens here. I’ve felt comfortable on them.”
