After a poor start to 2022 by his high standards, Tony Finau appears to be getting back on the rails.

The big hitter climbed back into contention on Sunday at the Mexico Open where he posted his best result of the 2021-22 season, T-2nd.

In his last start, Finau contended at a short par-70 like he’ll see this week. He carded three rounds in the 60s at Colonial en route to T-4th.

Finau’s up to six made cuts in a row, all of which resulted in T-41st or better.

His first win in five years last year at the Northern Trust did a lot to alleviate the pressure he surely felt during the drought. It didn’t open the floodgates for him to win in bunches, but he’s rounding into form to be victorious again soon.

Finau is making his debut at St. George’s.

He’s 4-for-4 making the cut at the RBC Canadian Open.

That’s highlighted by T-5th in 2017 at Glen Abbey.

The 32-year-old ranks 20th on the PGA Tour in strokes gained approach (.562) and 24th in SG off the tee (.487).

Finau’s length won’t be as big of an advantage as normal this week, but he’ll still find some corners to cut. Taking advantage of the two par-5 chances per round is also crucial. Finau is 16th in par-5 scoring (4.53).

Competition for the American Presidents Cup team is stiff as ever with just a few months left to qualify automatically. Finau’s currently on the outside looking in at 14th in points, so a good week here in Canada would go a long way to make the squad.
