A Canadian hasn’t won the RBC Canadian Open since Pat Fletcher in 1954.
Given the budding talent pool, someone from the maple leaf contingent ought to get it done sooner or later.
There are a few guys like Mackenzie Hughes or Adam Hadwin I could see prevailing this week. Corey Conners is the best bet.
Conners is from Listowel, Ontario, and will compete in his home province.
Conners hasn’t played this course in competition, but few in the field have since it hasn’t hosted since 2010.
The former Kent State Golden Flash is having a solid 2021-22 PGA Tour season. He’s missed just three cuts, has two top-10s and 10 top-30s. Conners made a run to the WGC-Dell Match Play semifinals and is coming off T-13th last week at the Memorial Tournament where he tied for low round of the day Sunday (69).
Conners’ one PGA Tour win came when he was an upstart player in 2019, winning the Valero Texas Open after Monday qualifying.
He’s a known commodity now and would love to back it up with another W.
Conners ranks 24th on the PGA Tour in total strokes gained (1.17) and is in the positive in every category. Driving is his strength (8th.700) and he’s accurate like you need to be around St. George’s (27th. 65.91%).
If Conners can tune out the pressure of trying to represent the red and white in style, he’s due to break out and contend.
