Justin Thomas is looking to start a new made-cuts streak. His run of 21 ended in understandable fashion a couple weeks ago at the Charles Schwab Challenge. JT grinded in the Texas heat to try to make the cut at Colonial, but he missed the weekend by two shots with rounds of 72-71.
It would have been easy for JT to back out of the tournament after winning the PGA Championship the week prior. He also could have mailed it in and shot 75-75 to ensure he got out of there ASAP to resume partying.
Thomas overcame the wrong side of the weather draw at Southern Hills, but could not do it at again Colonial. Not only did he have to go out early Thursday on short rest, but Thomas’ wave’s average score was 1.67 shots higher.
JT’s lengthy made-cut streak embodies his well-rounded skill set.
He has the ability to play a variety of shot types and score well on different courses.
Pure talent like his can sometimes rise to the top at a higher clip at quote en quote “neutral” sites like this where course history is near nonexistent.
Thomas was still in high school when the RBC Canadian Open last came to St. George’s in 2010. This is the American’s second trip north of the border. JT finished T-20th at the 2019 Canadian Open at Hamilton Golf and Country Club.
The 29-year-old’s got eight top-10s in 14 starts in the 2021-22 PGA Tour season. Prior to his win at Southern Hills, Thomas took T-5th at the AT&T Byron Nelson.
He ranks fourth in total strokes gained (1.841) and is 48th or better in every category. One of his few weaknesses is driving accuracy, which can be mitigated this week by pounding fairway woods off the tee.
If expected rain falls this week, softer fairways can help him find the short grass more often.
Fairways are narrow this week, but he’s still good enough to score from the rough at St. George’s that isn’t expected to be too crazy.
