2022 U.S. Open: Top 10 Power Rankings at The Country Club
Justin Thomas would have loved to win last week at the RBC Canadian Open, but he still should be plenty confident.
The 2022 PGA Champion got into a vaunted final group of Tony Finau and Rory McIlroy in Canada and finished in third place despite posting 63-64 on the weekend.
It was a nice bounceback for JT, whose only other start after Southern Hills was a missed cut the week after at Colonial. It snapped a streak of 21 made cuts, then the longest on the PGA Tour.
Thomas has been solid throughout 2022 with seven top-10s, two coming in majors.
In 26 career starts in majors, he’s made 21 cuts and four in a row. He has seven top-10s. He’s 5-for-7 at the U.S. Open and took T-19th last year at Torrey Pines.
Thomas will be motivated to win another major besides the PGA.
It’d get him halfway to the career Grand Slam.
The 29-year-old is third on the PGA Tour in total strokes gained (2.035) and is in the top 40 in every SG category.
Thomas is high up in many stats, including sand saves (66.67%), scoring average (69.192), and proximity from the fairway (27’1”). As long as he’s not too aggressive or wayward off the tee, he should be able to attack the proper portion of The Country Club’s small, sloping green complexes.
The Alabama alum is top 10 in proximity from any yardage range from 50-200 yards.
Thomas had just turned pro when the 2013 U.S. Amateur came to Brookline. Regardless, JT will look like a member at the Country Club the way he’ll be atop of the leaderboard come Sunday.
