One of the tests The Country Club will pose to players is getting up and down from thick rough protecting small greens.

Who better to ride with than one of the best short game wizards of this generation?

The U.S. Open’s patented narrow fairways are a concern for the occasionally wayward Spieth, for sure. But, by the same token, better drivers than him are still going to miss the short grass at a solid clip. He can gain ground with crafty shotmaking and course management.

The three-time major winner has a U.S. Open title in 2015 at Chambers Bay.

Spieth is 7-for-10 making the cut at this event with other highlights including T-21st to grab low amateur honors in 2012 and T-19th last year at Torrey Pines.

The Masters, Open Championship, and even the PGA Championship tend to be better fits for his game, but he’s still found success at his nation’s championship.

Spieth is 1-for-2 this year at the majors. It was a shocker to see him MC at Augusta National, but he at least made the weekend at Southern Hills to post T-34th at the PGA.

The former Texas Longhorn is having one of his best ball-striking seasons of his career. Spieth ranks 10th on the PGA Tour in strokes gained tee to green (1.34), up from 41st (.68) in 2020-21.

The 28-year-old is 20th in SG around the green (.368). From 10-20 yards, he’s 13th in scrambling at 73.39%. Spieth is also sixth in par-4 scoring (3.96).
