2022 U.S. Open: Good Omen For Collin Morikawa?
Collin Morikawa got off to a good start at this year’s U.S. Open, is it a sign of good things to come this week at The Country Club?
It’s been a decent year so for Collin Morikawa but outside of a few promising glimpses at both the Genesis Invitational where he was 2nd, and the Masters where he finished 5th, there hasn’t been much to write home about for Morikawa as of yet.
This was especially true in his previous start before coming into this year’s U.S. Open.
Morikawa suffered a rare missed cut at this year’s Memorial Tournament after rounds of 71 and 77, it was just his second missed cut in 2022 and it came at an event that he had finished runner-up at the previous year.
Last year’s ‘champion golfer of the year’ is looking to turn the page this week, and so far, so good, for the 25-year-old Morikawa.
The 2020 PGA Champion opened with a 69 on Thursday at The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts. The score puts him at one-under par for the event and currently inside of the top 10.
His opening round included a remarkable bogey-save on the closing 18th after a bizarre strike with his third ended up just several feet away in one of the deep greenside bunkers.
Collin Morikawa then produced a remarkable recovery shot from the bunker and was able to prevent what could have been a complete disaster on the last.
Good Omen for Collin Morikawa after his opening round at the U.S. Open?
It was a nice start to the week for the two-time Major winner and it could be a sign of great things to come for Collin Morikawa as Justin Ray alluded to.
Only time will tell if his opening round in the 60s eventually leads to a third Major title over the weekend.
If it does, Collin Morikawa would be one leg shy of the career grand slam needing just the Masters after previously winning the PGA in 2020 and the Open in 2021.
He would also become one of the youngest players in history to win three Majors, only Jordan Spieth and Jack Nicklaus accomplished the feat before the age of 24.
What a story that would be.
