U.S. Open: Two of the World’s Best Produce Fireworks on 600 Yard Par 5
Two of the best players in the World showed their class on the mammoth Par 5 at the 2022 U.S. Open on Friday.
World number one Scottie Scheffler had gotten off to a steady but not spectacular start at this year’s U.S. Open at The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts.
During his second round, he once again produced the type of brilliance on a golf course that we have grown accustomed to from the World’s top-ranked player in recent months.
The Masters champion was taking on one of the most eye-opening holes in this year’s U.S. Open, the mammoth 616 yard Par 5.
After crushing his tee-shot some 300 yards plus down the narrow, winding, fairway, he proceeded to take on the green with his second. His approach shot was errant however and soared left into the hillside rough 50 yards away from the hole.
It was in the coming moments that Scottie produced what has to be arguably the best shot of this year’s championship so far.
Using his brilliant hands Scheffler chipped off the hillside and watched on as his ball bounced onto the green and slowly rolled directly towards the hole before quite spectacularly finding the bottom of the cup.
The incredible shot sent the crowd into a frenzy and Scheffler soaring up the leaderboard and to within a shot of the lead at the time.
Meanwhile, a flying Brooks Koepka, who was having one of the best rounds of the day so far had given himself an incredible eagle chance on the same hole.
More brilliance at the U.S. Open’s Par 5 14th hole
Much like his playing partner, Scheffler, Brooks had crushed his tee shot right down the middle of the fairway. Unlike his playing partner, however, Koepka hit an incredible shot with his second to find the green in two for the second consecutive day.
Brooks was on quite the run before reaching the Par 5, having birdied two of his previous three holes. He crushed his approach shot from 275 yards out and watched on as his ball landed some fourteen feet away from the hole.
It was only fitting that he followed up Scheffler’s incredible eagle with a big bird of his own. The ensuing putt sloped gently down the green and into the hole.
It was Brooks’ 19th eagle in a Major since 2014 and it left him just one behind one Rory McIlroy for the most in the big events.
The World’s best are certainly stepping up on the big stage once again and with the late afternoon wave still to come on Friday we are surely in store for some more incredible moments in this year’s U.S. Open.
