Scottie Scheffler was oh so close to nabbing his second major of his career and of 2022.

A birdie putt on the 72nd hole at The Country Club slid by that would have eventually landed him a spot in a playoff at the U.S. Open.

Scheffler was second in the field in strokes gained approach for the week (9.21) but wasn’t as sharp as normal around the greens and had a hot and cold putter.

Alas, a T-2nd finish is another achievement in a historic season. He went from winless on the PGA Tour this time last year to owning four titles, including the 2022 Masters.

The U.S. Open was a nice bounceback from a missed cut at the PGA Championship.

Scheffler made it to the quarterfinals of the 2013 U.S. Amateur at The Country Club and did even better this time, carding rounds of 70-67-71-67 and owning a share or solo lead for chunks of the day Sunday.

Two opening birdies in the final round to jump into a share of the lead made it seem like it was his day. Scheffler made no glaring mistakes; it was just Matt Fitzpatrick’s day.

“My game is still in a good spot,” Scheffler was quoted by ASAP Sports. “Gave myself a chance to win the U.S. Open. Performed really well today under a lot of pressure. I made some key putts there in the beginning to kind of get today going.”

It was his second runner-up finish in his last three starts as he lost in a playoff to Sam Burns at the Charles Schwab Challenge.

Is Scottie back to being snakebit?

I doubt it.

He’s been the epitome of consistency with no other missed cuts this season besides at Southern Hills.

The 25-year-old ranks eighth on the PGA Tour in total strokes gained (1.652) and is in the top 40 of every SG category. Scheffler hits tons of greens (2nd, 71.39%) and while he can bomb it off the tee, he has the tools to contend at short venues like we’ll see this week.

The Texan is making his third trip to TPC River Highlands. He missed the cut (70-67) by one in 2020 despite shooting 3-under. Scheffler was able to stick around last year, posting 69-65-71-72 for T-47th.

If he wins this week, just go ahead and give him Player of the Year honors now.
