Collin Morikawa Reaffirms Commitment To PGA Amidst LIV Rumours
Just mere hours after the news that Brooks Koepka is making the jump to the LIV Golf Invitational Series, the rumors were still circulating around the potential announcement of another big name – Collin Morikawa.
Collin Morikawa took to Twitter this morning to reaffirm his position.
"“I’ve said it since February at Riviera that I’m here to stay on the @PGATOUR and nothing has changed.”"
Despite this reassurance, golf fans remain cautious as Dustin Johnson, Bryson DeChambeau and now Brooks Koepka had previously made public commitments only to later make the switch to LIV Golf.
It is difficult for many fans to remove the moral and ethical implications for golfers who choose to join LIV Golf due to their financial backer, the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund.
However, it’s not difficult to understand from a purely financial standpoint why many golfers who haven’t had a ton of recent success, are past their playing prime, or are less known up-and-comers, would look toward more lucrative playing opportunities.
For golf’s top stars, it’s a fine line between maximizing their winnings and playing against the strongest fields.
Given the amount of money being tossed around by LIV Golf to poach the PGA TOUR’s most popular players, there is concern that the strength of fields on both tours could become “watered down”.
The PGA TOUR had previously announced that any member who participates in LIV Golf events could receive fines, suspensions, and even bans for playing in a conflicting event without the approval of the PGA.
They stuck to that sentiment announcing that its members participating in the first LIV Golf tournament in London were no longer eligible to compete in tour events or the Presidents Cup.
Brooks Koepka won’t be the last of the top fifty golfers in the world to make the switch to LIV Golf.
Yet, Collin Morikawa’s reaffirmations have to be seen as a big win for the PGA TOUR. Collin Morikawa is a star on a meteoric rise.
Only 25 years old, Morikawa is the future of the sport and will be an impact player for years to come.
Since playing in his first tour event in 2019, he has already won five times, including two majors. He is currently ranked fourth in the Official World Golf Rankings.
