Jason Day is back in the Quad Cities for the first time in over a decade.

The Aussie has played in five John Deere Classics, but the last was in 2011.

He made the cut all four times at TPC Deere Run. The highlights were in 2009 (66-68-68-69) and 2010 (66-71-66-69) when he finished T-15th twice in a row. Day was just 18 when he debuted at the John Deere Classic in 2006. He made the cut in his first career PGA Tour start, posting 71-69-68-73 for T-67th. It also netted him “low Day” honors that week as Glen Day missed the cut.

Jason Day’s last round in Silvis in 2011 was a memorable one. Playing solo in the first group off on Sunday, he overheard some chatter from the galleries about how fast he’d finish his round. He decided his goal would be to finish his round in under two hours and shoot even par or better.

Both were accomplished as he posted 71 in 1 hour. 55 minutes.

That’s an ironic achievement for a player who’s known as one of the slowest in pro golf.

Injuries have plagued the former world No. 1 in recent years.

He lacks the firepower he once had, but still shows glimpses from time to time.

Day made four cuts in a row prior to an MC in his last start at the Travelers Championship. The 34-year-old finished a shot out of a playoff at the Farmers Insurance Open to finish T-3rd.

Competing well at a major championship caliber venue like Torrey Pines could be a good omen for Day if he can sneak into The Open Championship field with a high finish this week.

Day ranks 36th on the PGA Tour in strokes gained per round around the green (.283).
