2022 John Deere Classic: Top 10 Power Rankings at TPC Deere Run
When conditions ramped up at the U.S. Open, Denny McCarthy stepped up his game. With scores of 68-68, he tied eventual champion Matt Fitzpatrick and co-runner up Will Zalatoris for low score (-4) on the weekend.
Opening in 73-70 only got McCarthy past the cut by one shot, but he made the most of it by rocketing up the leaderboard for his best career finish in a major, T-7th.
“Just really proud of myself. This is a big stage, and I’m starting to get more comfortable at these events. I’ll be back for sure,” McCarthy was transcribed by ASAP Sports. “I like where my game is trending, and I’m going to keep working hard. I have really deep drive to get better. This is going to make me even more hungry.”
McCarthy may have been a relative unknown at The Country Club, but he’s quietly putting together a solid season.
The 29-year-old had a streak of 11 made cuts going until it was snapped last week at the Travelers Championship. He may have had a little travelers’ fatigue leading to a disappointing result in Hartford.
I see him taking the weekend off to rest before picking back up where he left off. McCarthy took T-5th at The Memorial Tournament presented by Workday in his previous start before the U.S. Open.
The former Virginia Cavalier has five top-10s in the 2021-22 season.
McCarthy is teeing it up at the John Deere Classic for the fourth time. He took T-34th (65-69-66-73) in 2018.
McCarthy is one of the best putters in the game. He ranks fifth on the PGA Tour in strokes gained putting (.789) and was first in 2019-20 (.988).
Long courses are tough for McCarthy, so this week is a nice respite. An accurate driver of his ilk will be rewarded this week (38th, 65.08%).
