2022 John Deere Classic: Three Longshots Who Can Win at TPC Deere Run
By Mack Gordon
With many players prepping for the 150th Open Championship, the field this week at the John Deere Classic is one of the weakest we’ve seen in quite a while on the PGA Tour.
Webb Simpson, Adam Hadwin, and Sahith Theegala are among the favorites as of this morning. The John Deere Classic will provide three exemptions for the Open Championship to the leading three players who finish in the top 10 and are not already exempt for the major championship.
Let’s take a look at some possible longshots that could take advantage of the less-than-stellar field this week.
Three Longshots For The John Deere Classic
Cameron Champ
The 27-year-old is in a bit of a slump, he’s missed the cut in nine of the 15 events he’s played this season including four straight coming into this week.
However, he finished T11 at the 2021 John Deere Classic despite entering the event with four missed cuts in his last five starts(WD in the other).
Look for the PGA Tour’s driving distance leader to attempt to overpower the field and grab his fourth PGA Tour victory. It will be critical for him to limit his big misses this week as TPC Deere Run will punish players for wayward drives.
Scott Brown
Are you looking for a veteran golfer with a history of successful starts at the John Deere Classic?
Scott Brown could be the longshot pick you are looking for, he’s made the cut in seven of his nine starts at the event including three top-10 finishes.
He came T4 at the 2021 John Deere Classic highlighted by a third-round 63 that put him in contention. Don’t be surprised if the 39-year-old plays well again this week, and with odds in the 150-1 range he’s worth a look.
Hayden Buckley
PGA Tour rookie Hayden Buckley is entering the 2022 John Deere Classic coming off T14 and T43 finishes in his last two starts(U.S. Open and Travelers Championship).
Buckley has shown glimpses of solid play throughout his rookie season, including his T14 finish at the U.S. Open earlier this month.
He began the 2021-2022 campaign with T4 and T8 finishes at the Sanderson Farms Championship and Shriners Children’s Open respectively.
With a driving accuracy percentage of 68.15(17th on tour), he should put himself in position to have tons of scoring opportunities this week at TPC Deere Run.
