Jordan Spieth came incredibly close to winning three majors in 2015. Already a Masters and U.S. Open champ, the 22-year-old strolled confidently to St. Andrews.

Scores of 67-72-66-69 left him one shot out of a playoff and in a tie for fourth place. He nearly made a Sunday comeback. Spieth led the field with 24 birdies

“I think controlling your trajectory as well as still having tight starting lines is the most important part about attacking this golf course off the tee and into the greens,” Spieth assessed in an ASAP Sports transcript from 2015.

Spieth finally got his Claret Jug in 2017 when he triumphed at Royal Birkdale.

The spirit of The Open Championship seems to speak to a golf purist like Spieth. He’s 8-for-8 making the cut at this event with four top-10s, including solo second last year at Royal St. George’s during the 2021 Open Championship.

For his career in majors, Spieth has made 32 cuts with 12 top-10s and 11 top-fives.

The 28-year-old is a winner in 2022 at the RBC Heritage. He nearly won in his next start at the AT&T Byron Nelson where he took solo second. He’s missed just one cut in his last eight starts.

Spieth got some links reps under his belt last week.

It started at the J.P. McManus Pro-Am in Ireland (where he amusingly was disqualified from official scoring due to scooping up his ball before holing out) and at the Genesis Scottish Open.

The former Texas Longhorn was in contention at The Renaissance Club and finished T-10th (68-72-66-72).

Spieth is having one of his best ball-striking seasons. He’s 20th on the PGA Tour in strokes gained per round tee to green (1.09) and is a healthy 34th in driving distance (307.5).

The putter has been uncharacteristically balky. Perhaps slower green speeds are what he needs to get his touch back.

I think Spieth will be inspired this week. It’ll lead to his best major championship finish of 2022.
