It might be Collin Morikawa’s debut at St. Andrews, but the same could be said last year for him at Royal St. George’s during The Open Championship. We all know how that turned out.

The 25-year-old is seeking to become the first back-to-back Champion Golfer of the Year since Padraig Harrington in 2007-08.

In fact, last year was Morikawa’s debut in The Open Championship, period.

Same when he won the 2020 PGA Championship. After a dominating amateur and collegiate career, he came out on tour and continued beating everyone.

Morikawa has come down to earth in some ways this year, thanks largely to his putter and short game in spite of his elite ball-striking. The former Cal Golden Bear is still a threat with four top-10s in 2022, including T-2nd at the Genesis Invitational.

Morikawa’s made the cut at all three majors this year.

That includes fifth at the Masters and T-5th at the U.S. Open.

He missed the cut at last week’s Genesis Scottish Open after rounds of 71-74. Not terrible, especially considering he was part of the late/early tee time wave that played to an average of 1.75 shots harder. He missed by two shots.

Morikawa ranks fourth on the PGA Tour in strokes gained approach per round (.847). He led that stat last year gaining more than a full stroke per round. He’s also sixth in proximity from the fairway (29’5”) and ninth from 50-125 yards (16’4”).
