Fantasy Golf: 2022 Open Championship DFS Player Selections
By Hans Geevers
This week, fantasy golf fans will be presented with the 2022 Open Championship! A stacked field of talent will battle for a chance to win the last major championship of the year. Let’s take a look at this year’s Open Championship from a fantasy golf perspective!
Before I discuss my fantasy golf player selections I wanted to emphasize that the purpose of this article is not to provide an exact lineup for a specific fantasy provider.
Having stated that, this article will provide multiple player options in an effort to assist the reader in generating a unique lineup that will hopefully have the potential to win a GPP (guaranteed prize pool) contest!
Now let’s shift our attention to my favorite fantasy golf/DFS player selections for the 2022 Open Championship.
Patrick Cantlay
The 2021 FedEx Cup champion arrives at this week’s major championship in outstanding form. More specifically, Cantlay has accumulated four consecutive top 14 finishes on the PGA Tour, including a third-place result at the 2022 Memorial Tournament last month.
In relation to this week’s current listed 2022 Open Championship field, in the last 12 rounds played on the PGA Tour, Patrick Cantlay ranks fourth in birdie or better percentage, 16th in GIR (greens in regulation), and fifth in strokes gained on par fives.
It should also be noted that Patrick Cantlay finished 12th at the 2018 Open Championship.
Gary Woodland
Since the beginning of March, Gary Woodland has played 13 tournaments on the PGA Tour.
In those 13 events just mentioned, Woodland has accumulated seven top 24 finishes, including a tenth-place result at the 2022 U.S. Open three weeks ago.
Gary Woodland certainly has the talent to win a major championship. Let us not forget that he has done it before. Woodland won the 2019 U.S. Open.
Tyrrell Hatton
Tyrrell Hatton fired a first round 68 at last week’s 2022 Scottish Open on his way to an eventual 24th place result.
Tyrrell Hatton certainly checks the box for me when it comes to location form. Since 2017, Hatton has played ten tournaments in Scotland. In those ten events just mentioned, Hatton has accumulated eight top 24 finishes, including a second-place result at the 2021 Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.
Seamus Power
Since the beginning of May, Seamus Power has played seven tournaments (DP World and PGA Tours combined). in those seven events just mentioned, Power has accumulated five top 30 finishes, including a 12th-place result at the 2022 U.S. Open last month.
Jamie Donaldson
The 46-year-old Englishman has accumulated two consecutive top 20 finishes on the DP World Tour, including a sixth place result at the 2022 Scottish Open.
I expect Donaldson to be a low cost play across all DFS platforms. Having stated that, I think Jamie Donaldson presents outstanding fantasy golf value this week.
Additional golfers I like this week: Tony Finau: Jordan Spieth: Thomas Detry.
