Three under-par rounds en route to T-34th at The Old Course made for a solid Open Championship debut for Sahith Theegala. He was in contention after rounds of 69-68 but couldn’t keep the pedal down on Saturday when the course was gettable.

Theegala comes to the 3M Open for the second time.

He missed the cut in 2020 in his third start as a pro, posting rounds of 72-72. Theegala was a Haskins Award winner at Pepperdine but struggled early on as a pro. The timing of the pandemic did not coincide well with his budding career, either.

The guy’s got a good attitude about him, though, and he has kept plugging away. In 2021, he earned his PGA Tour card through the Korn Ferry Tour finals and is now a PGA Tour Rookie of the Year candidate.

He’s done everything shy of winning this season with a lead late on the 17th hole Sunday at the WM Phoenix Open before falling to T-3rd. He led on the 18th hole Sunday at the Travelers Championship before a fairway bunker doomed his chances. He went on to post a career-best T-2nd finish.

Theegala is up to five top-10s in 2021-22. Last week at The Open Championship was his 12th made cut in a row going back to March.

The 24-year-old is gaining strokes in every category this season on the PGA Tour except for putting. That should come as he acclimates to courses. Theegala is 16th in par-5 scoring (4.53) and should be able to ball-strike with the best of them this week in Blaine.
