Major championships do a pretty good job of getting the best players into their fields. Unfortunately, Davis Riley was not at St. Andrews last week.

He wasn’t quite able to climb inside the top 60 in the Official World Golf Ranking in time and missed out on getting in the field via The Open Qualifying Series.

It’s too bad, considering the type of season the PGA Tour Rookie of the Year candidate is having. He was in contention to win this spring at the Valspar Championship where he took second place, one of now three top-fives and five top-10s.

At the majors, Riley took T-13th at the PGA Championship and T-31st at the U.S. Open.

He’s on a streak of seven made cuts, six of which were T-31st or better.

This will be the 25-year-old’s debut at TPC Twin Cities.

The former University of Alabama standout’s stats this season on the PGA Tour aren’t eye-popping, but they’re pretty solid across the board. His short game is a spot of weakness, but he should be able to hit plenty of greens this week to negate that.

Riley is 50th on the PGA Tour in strokes gained tee to green per round (.546). He hits it fairly far and straight off the tee and can pile up red numbers. Riley’s 12th in birdie average (4.21).

Even though this is his first time at this event, he should be one of the most rested and prepared to play compared to those coming from The Open or Barracuda Championship. That’s why I like Riley to contend for the title.
