2022 Rocket Mortgage Classic: Top 10 Power Rankings at Detroit GC
The Rocket Mortgage Classic has been one of the more prosperous stops on the schedule during Maverick McNealy’s young, promising career.
As a rookie, the Stanford alum took T-8th in his tournament debut in 2020. He was under par all four rounds (68-68-71-66) and was just three shots out of third place.
McNealy posted 68-69-72-67 for T-21st last year. Just turn those Saturday rounds into sub-70s and he’ll really be cooking with gas.
The Stanford alum is a California kid, but he’s got plenty of connections to the Motor City.
“It’s really special to come here, too, because my dad grew up here in Detroit and my grandpa worked for American Motors,” McNealy was transcribed by Tee Scripts in 2020. My three brothers and I are all named after American cars actually because of the Detroit connection. It’s fun thinking back the last time I was here was when my dad caddied for me at the U.S. Amateur at Oakland Hills a couple years ago.”
McNealy is on the cusp of landing his first PGA Tour win.
He’s been highly consistent with just three missed cuts in the 2021-22 season and four top-10s. His best-ever finish came in the fall where he was outdueled by fellow Californian, Max Homa, by a shot.
McNealy picked up his fourth straight made cut last week at the 3M Open (T-49th). His previous three starts were all T-16th or better, highlighted by T-8th at the John Deere Classic.
The 26-year-old ranks second on the PGA Tour in holes per eagle (78) and is 20th in birdies per round (4.1).
