Tony Finau continues to roll after bogey-free round in Detroit.

Last week Tony Finau was busy putting the finishing touches on his third career win in Minnesota, this week at the Rocket Mortgage Classic Finau has picked up right where he left off.

The 3M Open winner sizzled on Thursday at Detroit Golf Club en route to a bogey-free opening round 64 that fell just one shy of the course record in the Motor City.

Tony hit all 18 greens in regulation on Thursday and the 32-year-old is really on a roll now with the FedEx Cup playoffs fast approaching. Tony Finau is now up to 17th in the current FedEx Cup standings and he is well on track to make the season-ending Tour Championship at East Lake for an impressive seventh consecutive year.

With the Presidents Cup at Quail Hollow now fast approaching in late September, Finau is finding his form at the perfect time. After last week’s victory, Tony climbed up to 7th in the current U.S. team standings, just one spot shy of an automatic berth into this fall’s historic competition.

“Yeah, felt like that a little bit, but it’s a whole different week. This game’s a funny game because sometimes you play well and the next week you’re a little flat, sometimes you play well and you keep it going. It was nice to keep it going after last week and keep it going today,” Finau said following his opening round.

The 32-year-old began his day with a birdie right out of the gate after starting his round on Detroit Golf Club’s back nine.

After a fantastic drive into the heart of the fairway, Finau struck his approach into the 10th green to just outside of eight feet. He then proceeded to roll in the birdie putt which really set the tone for the rest of his day.

He would add four more birdies to the card before making the turn in 31. Finau’s round could have been even better but he left a few putts out there, still, it was another solid performance on the greens as he gained strokes with the flat stick, something which was key during his charge up the leaderboard last Sunday in Minnesota.

Tony Finau finishes with a flurry at the Rocket Mortgage Classic

Tony Finau would tack on another birdie to begin his closing nine on Thursday before proceeding to finish with a flurry in Detroit.

The 2022 3M Open winner first took advantage of the Par 5, 7th, where he added another birdie to the card to move his tally to 7 under for the day.

Then on the short Par 4, 8th, Finau hit his approach into the green some 40 feet away from the hole before proceeding to drain the massive long-distance putt for yet another birdie.

After moving to eight-under Par for his round Finau made his way up his last hole of the day with a chance at the course record. He sent his tee-shot into the heart of the Par 3, 9th’s green for what was his 18th hit green on the day.

Tony Finau then had about a 20-footer for a third consecutive birdie and the course record. He would leave the ensuing putt agonizingly short before eventually tapping in for Par and an impressive opening round 64.

“I was. My last shot lacked a lot of conviction, I wanted to get that — at least get it to the hole, give it a shot. A few of my putts were like that out there, just left them right in the heart a little short. Wasn’t super happy that I left it short, but overall it was a nice round,” Finau responded when asked if he was aware that he had a shot at the record.
