2022 Rocket Mortgage Classic: Adam Scott Comes Undone In Detroit
Adam Scott’s once-promising week in Detroit evaporated in the blink of an eye on Saturday at the Rocket Mortgage Classic.
What happened to Adam Scott this weekend at Detroit Golf Club is almost too difficult to comprehend. The Australian was having a fantastic week through two rounds of this year’s Rocket Mortgage Classic before it all fell apart over the course of 18 holes during his third round.
The 2013 Masters winner made a significant move up the leaderboard following his bogey-free round of 66 on Friday.
Scott was rightfully feeling good about his performance on Friday, particularly with how well he had driven the ball across the first two rounds this week.
“Yesterday was for sure the best I’ve driven it for a couple of years maybe and that felt good, and I drove it well again today,” he said.
Adam Scott credited the gains he had made with the driver to adjustments he had made following the U.S. Open.
The changes were evident, both during the Open Championship at St. Andrews a couple of weeks ago where he turned out a solid T15 finish, and through the first two rounds of this week’s Rocket Mortgage Classic which had left Scott six shots back and well within the top 10 on the leaderboard following one of the rounds of the day on Friday.

“I’m sure I’ll be quite a few back starting the weekend, but my game is in a good spot and I think I can play well on the weekend and make up the ground,” were Scott’s comments following the completion of his second round on Friday.
Turns out he was right about the first part, both Taylor Pendrith and Tony Finau were able to create some separation from the chasing pack heading into moving day, leaving Scott with some work to do over the weekend.
Unfortunately for Adam, the second part of his statement did not come to fruition, not in the slightest.
Saturday’s round was a complete disaster for Adam Scott, who at times appeared to be playing a completely different course from the majority of the field.
Detroit Country Club yielded a -2.29 scoring average for the majority of the field on moving day, but while others were flourishing Scott crumbled en route to what turned out to be the worst round of the day.
The 29-time career winner endured a brutal birdie-less back nine that included four bogeys and a double. The resulting 78, six-over-par round, dropped Adam all the way down to a share of 66th place when all was said and done.
A once-promising week had evaporated in the blink of an eye.
Adam Scott will look to rebound a bit on Sunday before making his way to North Carolina next week for the season-finale Wyndham Championship, a tournament the Australian will have mixed feelings about after his playoff loss there last year.
