2022 Wyndham Championship: Top 10 Power Rankings at Sedgefield
If you want to know how much the Wyndham Championship means to Webb Simpson, just look at one of his daughters’ names. His second-born girl was named Wyndham in honor of the site of Webb’s first PGA Tour win in 2011.
It’s hard to believe he hasn’t won at Sedgefield Country Club since, but Simpson’s posted a mountain of high finishes.
In 13 starts, the Raleigh, North Carolina native and Charlotte resident owns 12 straight made cuts after missing in his 2009 debut.
Along with his win (66-65-64-67) in 2011, he finished T-5th (64-69-66-67) in 2014, T-6th (67-67-64-68) in 2015, third (63-64-68-67) in 2017, T-2nd (66-68-66-62) in 2018, second (64-65-65-65) in 2019, T-3rd (66-66-65-65) in 2020 and T-7th (65-65-70-66) in 2021.
He was a shot out of a playoff at this event in 2019 and 2021.
“I feel like golf course designers, modern day designers who design the big courses, they can all get a lesson from the Donald Ross,” Simpson was quoted by ASAP Sports in 2013. “Come to Sedgefield, going to a lot of land in Hawaii, going to Hilton Head, these shorter, tighter courses have so much more character and I think that’s what I mean so we just don’t get a chance the play these courses much and you really got to think your away around Sedgefield. You can hit driver or you can hit 3-iron on a lot of holes.”
Simpson ranked third in the field in strokes gained tee to green for the week (9.586). He was 118th in the field in driving distance (308.6), but this is a place he can get away with being a shorter hitter.
I considered ranking Simpson much higher this week, but his current form leaves a little to be desired. Clearly form coming into the Wyndham Championship is not too relevant for a horse for the course like him, but a pair of missed cuts and T-69th last week at the Rocket Mortgage Classic is a bit concerning.
This season, the 36-year-old is gaining strokes in every strokes gained category. He’s 44th in SG around the green per round (.226) and is first in approach proximity from 50-75 yards (7’1”).
